Hi,
I have a panStick 4.0 board that I haven't soldered any panStamp onto yet. Should it still be safe to connect it to USB, even if I also don't connect it to any other board? And should it still enumerate (show up as a serial port on the PC)?
I figured that this should work perfectly fine, since IIUC it's supposed to work with just the serial lines connected to a panStamp (for in-system programming), but I haven't been able to find an explicit answer to that question, so figured I'd ask just to make sure.
Essentially the first thing I did with my panStick was to try just that (thinking it would be a quick sanity check), but it didn't work... and now I can't get it to work with the serial lines connected to an NRG2 either, but that's admittedly via some custom hardware (which doesn't do anything else yet), so that might be a problem with that hardware.
I checked the kernel log (dmesg), which usually shows something when I plug in a USB device even if it has trouble talking to that device for some reason, but it doesn't show anything (so I don't think it can be a driver problem).
I also tested the USB cable with my phone, which worked fine (transferred files with no problem).
I'm guessing I might have gotten a non-working stick, but since I'm not actually completely sure I didn't break it myself by connecting it to USB without a stamp on it, I figured I'd ask about that first before contacting the store about it... (And if it's not safe, that would let me avoid breaking the next one...
